SZA’s SOS (Deluxe) ‘Lana’ Lives Up to the Hype

When SZA’s “SOS” arrived in December 2022, it didn’t just dominate the charts—it redefined modern R&B. Nearly a year later, “SOS (Deluxe),” also known as “Lana,” offers fans a fresh perspective on an album that already left its mark. “Lana” stands out by exploring themes of love, loss and self-discovery. But does this deluxe version live up to the hype, or does it simply satisfy fans’ anticipation?

Released almost a year after its predecessor, “SOS (Deluxe),” also known as “Lana,” takes its name from SZA’s childhood nickname. Fans eagerly anticipated the deluxe edition after she teased multiple album covers featuring the caption “Lana” on her Instagram in December 2023. The excitement grew with the release of her chart-topping single “Saturn,” setting up anticipation for the deluxe edition, which dropped on Dec. 20, 2024. Although the deluxe was delayed, the album was refined for perfection, expanding on the vulnerability and emotional depth that made “SOS” a standout album. Soon after its release, the album returned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on Dec. 29, 2024, according to Billboard. The deluxe edition includes 15 new tracks, such as “Saturn,” and a powerhouse feature from Kendrick Lamar, offering listeners a continuation of SZA’s emotional and personal journey.

“Lana” provides a different take on the themes of “SOS.” With SZA’s intricate wordplay and masterful songwriting, she shares more of her story through an alternate R&B and soul sound. Her lyrics hold different meanings for each listener. The first half of the deluxe album is honest, open and blunt, showcasing her accomplishments, acknowledging her past and emotions, and expressing her freedom—whether through confidence or vulnerability. She conveys these emotions in songs like “No More Hiding,” “What Do I Do” and “30 for 30.”

She later brings back an unreleased fan favorite, “Diamond Boy (DTM),” a song she originally teased on Instagram in July 2023. SZA’s versatility allows her to explore multiple genres. Tracks like “BMF” lean toward pop, while “Scorsese Baby Daddy” has the same pop-rock feel as “F2F.” As the album reaches its second half, standout tracks include “Crybaby,” “Kitchen” and “Drive.” She closes the album with “Another Life,” a strong finisher that cements the deluxe edition’s place within “SOS.”

While “Lana” may not stand alone as a masterpiece, it amplifies the impact of “SOS,” solidifies SZA’s place as a leader in R&B and paves the way for future generations of the genre. By maintaining the core themes of the original album while incorporating multiple genres and sounds, SZA takes fans on the emotional journey she has shared from the beginning. Her relatable songwriting and genre versatility keep her at the forefront of modern pop music.

According to Pitchfork, “Lana” received a rating of 8.8. As a dedicated music fan, particularly of SZA, I would give this album a solid 9/10. Despite the delayed release, the deluxe edition lives up to the hype, offering an enhanced version of an already iconic album.

Fans can expect SZA to headline her first arena tour in April 2025 alongside her powerhouse TDE labelmate Kendrick Lamar.
