In a timely celebration for Black History Month, the beloved Peanuts character Franklin Armstrong, who once struggled to find his place at the table, now takes center stage in his own television special.

Titled “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home Franklin,” this special, now available on Apple TV Plus, tells the heartwarming story of Franklin’s journey to a new community, where he aims to make friends by winning the Soap Box Derby.

Originally introduced in the Peanuts comic strip on July 31, 1968, Franklin’s character faced challenges familiar to many. In the first animated appearance in 1972’s “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving,” Franklin was notably seated in an unstable chair, isolated from the rest of the group. While this was initially seen as progress, it eventually became a symbol of his separation from his peers.

Reflecting on the evolution of Franklin’s character, Robin Reed, the original voice from the animation, told MSNBC, “It’s so very easy to get offended or upset, but we have to remember that at that time, that actually represented progress.”

The new special, “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home Franklin,” aims to rewrite this narrative, presenting a positive and inclusive story for a new generation. The storyline follows Franklin as he navigates the ups and downs of moving to a new town, hoping to make connections and friendships along the way.

When the opportunity to compete in the Soap Box Derby arises, Franklin teams up with the iconic Charlie Brown, setting the stage for a heartwarming tale of friendship and determination.

“I’m Franklin Armstrong,” he introduces himself in the special, echoing the familiar lines from the comic strip. “My family is always on the move.” Through his adventures in the Soap Box Derby, Franklin exemplifies resilience and the spirit of overcoming obstacles, with Charlie Brown by his side as his partner.

The release of this special on Apple TV Plus marks a new chapter for Franklin, offering a fresh perspective on his character and story. It serves as a celebration of inclusivity, friendship, and the enduring legacy of the Peanuts characters.

As audiences learn more about Franklin’s story, they are reminded of the importance of acceptance and unity, making “Snoopy Presents: Welcome Home Franklin” a fitting tribute for Black History Month and a new message of progression for viewers of all ages.
