Famu womens basketball bounces back against jsu

The Florida A&M University Women’s Basketball team is back in the win column after a win against the Jackson State University Tigers 68-63. The “Lady Rattlers” improve to fourth in the SWAC and have a four-game winning streak at home.

            The Lady Rattlers found themselves in a nine-point deficit late in the second quarter, after Jada Patton made a mid-range jump shot to make the score 30-21. FAMU was able to climb back into the game and took their first lead, following a Aina Subirats three-pointer, makingthe score 46-45 late in the third quarter.

            The keys for victory for the FAMU was turnovers and free throws. The Rattler defense was able to force 20 Tiger turnovers with eight of them coming in the second half. FAMU was able to finish with 24 points following those turnovers.

            The Lady Rattlers were outscored in the three-point column by 15 but neutralized that through free throws. FAMU finished the game 15 of 20 from the free throw line with guard Camille Jackson making 8 of her 10 attempts. FAMU was led in scoring by Shaniyah McCarthy who contributed 22 points while shooting 64%.  Tahnyjia Purifoy contributed 11 points, five assists and four steals.

             “ I have been enjoying coaching this team since the first time I’ve been here,” the game head coach Bridgette Gordon said.  ‘If we just take care of us, then everything else will happen”.

FAMU improves to 5-12 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while the Tigers fall to 4-14 on the season and 2-4 in conference play. The Lady Rattlers will take on the Alcorn State University Braves on Saturday Jan. 24 at 4:00 p.m. EST.
