A strong cold front swept through Tallahassee in January, bringing freezing temperatures and unusually cold conditions to the area.

Overnight lows dropped into the 20s, prompting freeze warnings and causing residents to bundle up and adjust their daily routines. The cold weather followed several weeks of mild winter conditions, making the sudden temperature drop more noticeable across the city.

Annie Brown, an 80-year-old longtime Tallahassee resident, said cold weather is not unusual for the area, but this stretch feels different.

“It has been years since it’s been this cold,” Brown said. “It doesn’t usually last this long, and it feels colder than what we’re used to.”

Brown said preparation is especially important for residents who are not used to North Florida winters.

“You have to make sure you have the right clothes for this kind of weather,” she said. “In my house, we always keep food stocked in case there’s a freeze.”

Students and residents were seen wearing heavier jackets and limiting time outdoors during the coldest parts of the day. Local officials encouraged residents to take precautions to protect pets, plants and pipes during freezing temperatures.

Forecasters say another surge of cold air is expected this weekend, bringing gusty winds and the potential for more intense freezing conditions. Tallahassee has not experienced cold temperatures this low since 2022.
