On Friday, Nov. 8, the Recording Academy released this year’s Grammy nominations on YouTube, and a wave of disappointment has washed over social media.
Fans worldwide have taken to X to share their opinions on artists who were snubbed for nominations, including artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Tyla, and ,most shockingly, Ariana Grande.
Grande released her seventh studio album, ‘Eternal Sunshine,’ earlier this year, and it is a beautiful body of work. As the album was released amid her divorce from her three-year marriage, Grande covered her feelings during the breakup. Many of her fans, ‘Arianators,’ feel she was snubbed from the main categories, such as best music video, album of the year, and song of the year.
Grande received three nominations: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Dance Pop Recording, none of which highlighted the visuals that came with the project. As an ‘Arianator,’ I am shocked she was not nominated for the best music video award for the second single, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love).
While I agree with ‘Arianators’ that she was snubbed for best music video, I disagree with album and song of the year. If you think in a broader sense, other projects stuck around longer than Eternal Sunshine. To be nominated for album of the year, we can’t just think of one party. I will say that there are many sneaks in this category; the only people deserving of this nomination, in my opinion, are Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish.
When I think of an album of the year, I think of not just streams, but lyricism, the feelings I felt when listening, transitions from song to song, production and most importantly, the number of people I see talking about the said album. While Ariana had everything included in her album above, just because the album hit for me doesn’t necessarily mean it hit that way for the general population.
I believe Ariana can take home at least one award next year, but considering the general population, she was only snubbed for one nomination. To be nominated for three awards is a huge accomplishment, but I understand fans’ frustration, considering how hard Ariana works.
Do you think Ariana Grande was snubbed?
