For many Florida A&M University students, nightlife is part of the college experience.

As students explore off-campus events, clubs and parties, safety remains an important concern. Law enforcement and student event organizers say responsible choices, planning ahead and secure venues can help ensure students enjoy nightlife while avoiding unnecessary risks.

According to Administrative Lt. LaRhonda Gordon of the Florida A&M University Police Department, alcohol-related issues remain one of the most common concerns.

“Underage drinking and overconsumption of alcohol are the most common safety concerns we currently face in the nightlife involving students,” Gordon said. “Students often lose their ability to think rationally when alcohol is present.”

Gordon also noted that illegal substances and unregulated products, such as THC-infused gummies sold in smoke shops, can create additional risks for students who may not know what ingredients they contain.

To help reduce these risks, FAMU Police encourage students to plan ahead before going out. Gordon recommends using a buddy system and staying in groups whenever possible.

“Always party in a group and have a designated sober friend to be the ears and eyes until returning to campus,” Gordon said. “If traveling alone, always share your location with someone you trust.”

Students involved in organizing nightlife events say safety must also be considered when planning gatherings.

Jullion Griffin, a third-year public relations student at FAMU and founder of Only a Few Entertainment, said his team intentionally avoids hosting unregulated outdoor gatherings because of the risks they can create.

“You never see us throwing block parties or events that aren’t secure, because those are liabilities,” Griffin said. “We have a big influence, so we have to be cautious about where we bring students together.”

Instead, Griffin said his team prioritizes controlled venues and security measures to ensure students can enjoy themselves safely.

Griffin also encourages students to approach nightlife with the right mindset and balance.
“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right,” Griffin said, calling it one of his favorite quotes that he applies to his everyday life. “You can step out, have a good time and still stay focused on your goals.”

Through preparation, awareness and collaboration between students and law enforcement, many believe Tallahassee nightlife can remain both enjoyable and safe for the FAMU community.
