TALLAHASSEE, FL— Style, beauty, and expression filled the salon at Rattler’s Edge as Mielle Organics, celebrity stylist Hair by Susy, and other stylists styled Florida A&M University students and alumni.

Black-founded company Mielle Organics came to FAMU’s campus as part of its #StayReady tour with this year’s campaign theme of “never miss the moment.”

According to an internal study from Mielle’s research, 70% of textured hair consumers almost miss out on up to 4 moments a month due to hair satisfaction, and nearly 15 million black women almost miss out on important moments every month due to hair-related challenges.

Mielle’s communications team lead, Janasia Johnson, who has a passion for giving back and mentoring, discussed why Mielle’s initiative took this specific route.

“People don’t have to miss out on things like HBCU Homecomings, concerts, things of that sort, because we know how important these moments are,” Johnson said. “We want to make sure that you’re able to show up.”

Alongside the brand’s extension of haircare services and free products to students, celebrity stylist Susy Oludele made an appearance.

“They’re coming back to homecoming and—giving back and showcasing the products in a different way,” said Oludele. “It’s where like students are able to use the products at home and also giving them that salon experience because salon experiences is like one of the most inspiring things in a in a person’s life.”

Oludele has styled numerous celebrities, including Beyonce’s ‘lemonade braids’, and created sculptures with creativity and faith at the forefront.

“Honestly, I always bring it back to God again—Most of the time, I have no idea what I’m creating; it’s always like a surprise,” said Oludele.

While remaining true to herself and her craft, another main objective is to make sure her clients are happy with her work.

The salon experience was not limited to just women; young men also came for haircuts and other maintenance for the upcoming homecoming festivities.

Barber at Rattler’s Edge for over 20 years and assisting with Mielle’s hair experience, Johann Rutherford understands the importance of upkeep for male students as well.

“I think a man, when he looks good, he feels good. When he feels good, he looks good,” said Rutherford. “I believe that this is an age where men are really realizing to take care of themselves.”

Rutherford believes that encouraging youth to take care of themselves is pivotal and more than just getting a style.

“I’ve had the joy of seeing a lot of men just be able to grow and to mature, you know, men who are able to take on the world,” said Rutherford.

The next stops on Mielle’s tour will be at Magic City Classic, Alabama State University, Alabama A&M University, and Winston-Salem University.
